Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed he is not sure if Simon Mignolet has a future at Anfield following his decision to make Loris Karius his first choice in goal.

Per MailOnline’s Spencer Morgan, the German confirmed he will no longer be rotating his goalkeepers in cup competitions and Karius—who has played in each of their last five Premier League games—will remain in goal against Porto in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

Asked whether his decision will have an impact on Mignolet’s future, he replied:

“Nobody knows about the future, or I don’t know about the future. In this business it is always the same—it says nothing about that.

“It’s not for me to think about these kind of things. I have to make a decision for tomorrow night and that’s all. No problem.”

The Belgian was Klopp’s Premier League goalkeeper of choice for the first half of the season, with Karius appearing in just three matches in the English top flight prior to the turn of the year.

Karius had appeared in the UEFA Champions League, though, and he’ll remain the pick for the competition despite also being the week-to-week choice now.

The German has had a rocky time at Anfield since he joined in the summer of 2016, but his performances in recent weeks have impressed a number of pundits, including former goalkeeper David Preece, the Guardian‘s Sachin Nakrani and Bleacher Report’s Sam Tighe:

His form does not bode well for Mignolet, and Karius is likely benefiting from playing more regularly than he was before, particularly now he has a stronger defensive unit in front of him thanks to the arrival of Virgil van Dijk.

Mignolet’s time at Liverpool has been punctuated by errors, and many Reds fans would likely be accepting at the prospect of his departure.

If Karius can continue to impress for the rest of the season it’s likely Mignolet will be on his way, and he might also ensure the Reds do not have to focus on dipping into the transfer market for a new No. 1 in the summer.
