Real Madrid are reportedly confident of signing Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.
Ahead of the UEFA Champions League showdown between the two sides on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu, it’s been reported by Miguel Delaney of The Independent there is a feeling at Los Blancos that the Brazilian will “definitely” join them this summer.
“Those who state it do so with surprisingly striking confidence, and it is being put down to much more than the typical arrogance of the Spanish champions in the market,” Delaney added. “There is something much more concrete to it.”
It’s also reported that Madrid, who are off the pace in La Liga and out of the Copa del Rey, are ready to embark on a massive summer spending spree.
Delaney said Los Blancos are ready to oversee one of the busiest transfer windows the club has seen in recent years and “a lot of good players could be available from the Bernabeu.” The prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo being “included in any major deal” is also noted.
Links between Neymar and Madrid make the meeting between these two giants of European football all the more fascinating. The Brazilian, having become the most expensive player in the history of the game ahead of this season, will be expected to perform on this huge stage.
He’s done exactly that in the UEFA Champions League so far, as noted by the competition’s official Twitter account:
It’s these occasions that would’ve prompted PSG into spending £198 million to get Neymar in in the summer, though.
While there’s so much focus on Neymar’s flamboyance and his lifestyle off the field, what makes the Brazilian so special is his ability to shine in these high-pressure contests. After all, when Barcelona triumphed in the Champions League in 2014-15, he produced in every knockout clash for the team.
It’s why recent links between Neymar and Real have made sense. Madrid are a club renowned for spending big money on the best attacking players in the game, and the PSG No. 10 undoubtedly falls into that category.
As we can see here courtesy of RMadrid Edition, French newspaper L’Equipe suggested the meeting in the Spanish capital on Wednesday may be a seminal one:
Meanwhile, former Real midfielder Guti has made it clear he would love to see Neymar line up alongside the likes of Ronaldo:
Should Neymar turn it on at the Bernabeu, speculation about a summer move will only intensify, especially given a number of Madrid’s stalwarts are edging a little beyond their peak years and the Brazilian is playing the best football of his career.
PSG appear intent on building a dominating project, and having sprung such a coup to land Neymar, you sense there’d be a reluctance on their part to sell him.
